I live in northeastern, Pa. Rn hourly start rate is about the same as what scroakman from Rochester, NY has in her commments. I was recently working on the med/surg floor at a local hospital on second shift. They gave a 60cents per hour shift differential for working second shift !!!! What an insult ! They wonder why no one wants to work that shift. You never see your family, there is never enough help, and there isn't any incentive. By the way mashall4 LPNs start at around $13/hr in my area. I recently found this out and was very surprised. I feel that LPNs should get a much better rate than that.

Thats nothing, I read a posting from a hospital in NY that for RN with at least 2 yrs of experience the starting pay is $45.00 an hour, same experience for lpn is $25 and CNA same experience $15.00 not bad!!!

In, Texas, Dallas and Houston are the two top paying cities. However, if you work at a small hospital out in the country GN make typically from $19.50 to $21.50 base pay. So, basically it's where and what you are doing.

I am a LPN in Alabama and I don't have any friends that are working for the ridiculous pay that was quoted. I hope to be starting RN school in September but I'm doing very well. To date, I've already made $32, 000 this year. If I made the amount stated here, I would need public assistance. I get paid weekly and my checks on average are $1000......and that's after taxes.

The nursing pay rates are driven by a state's population, number of area hospitals, and its ability to attract qualified nursing candidates. Naturally, big states with large populations have many hospitals and a large unmet need for RN's. In some areas, nurses are unionized, and this drives up wages. It's not surprising that lowest wages appear to be in the upper southwest of the U.S., the population is much smaller and therefore the need for RN's is less.

As an RN nearly 25 years and working in health care 30+ , I am glad to see nurses communicating and not eating their young. The bottom line is- we are the last hope for a failing health care system. The last link of survival for a patient caught up in this machine we call healthcare. We must be vocal about our wages, benefits and compensation. Yet we must also be dedicated to the best interest of our patients. Current trends by Corporate Amerca are to make all nurses the same, pull you anywhere within the facility and not pay for your specialty training and experience, neglecting the safety to the patients in this action. Do not let any facility force you into accepting substandard wages or substandard safe care for your patients. Continue to speak up, the care you deliver today will set the standard for the care delivered to you tomorrow.
