CNA/NNOC Endorses Sen. Barack Obama
US Newswire
June 26, 2008
The nation’s largest organization of registered nurses, the California Nurses Association/ National Nurses Organizing Committee, today endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.
In announcing its endorsement, the 80,000-member CNA/NNOC (AFL- CIO), which has members in all 50 states, cited “a stark distinction between Sen. Obama and Sen. John McCain on major fundamental issues facing the American people today, especially in reforming our broken healthcare system, repairing our collapsing economy, and restoring workplace protections and rights for American workers.”
“From the shredding of our public safety net, to the transfer of critically needed domestic resources for an irresponsible war, to the abandonment of environmental and labor law safeguards over the past eight years, the need for change in Washington is paramount,” said Malinda Markowitz, RN, on behalf of the CNA/NNOC Council of Presidents.
“We have been impressed with Sen. Obama’s efforts to broaden, enrich, and revive our democracy by bringing more Americans into our political process and giving them a sense of hope and confidence for a more just, more humane America,” Markowitz said.
The endorsement was voted upon by CNA/NNOC’s 35-member board, all direct-care RNs. It coincided with an endorsement of Obama today by the AFL-CIO; CNA/NNOC Executive Director Rose Ann DeMoro is a national vice president of the AFL-CIO and a member of its Executive Council.
In its endorsement statement, CNA/NNOC also said:
“Our first concern is the disintegrating healthcare system. The unconscionable rise in the number of uninsured and underinsured Americans, the pain and suffering of families who must choose between paying for needed medical care or their mortgage, and the crime of a callous insurance industry refusing to provide care patients need, is the hallmark of the past eight years and a national shame.”
“Yet Sen. McCain offers virtually no change in the failures of the Bush administration. His prescription of tax credits for those who can most afford them and further deregulation of an already barely regulated industry will only perpetuate the disparities of a healthcare system which has abandoned so many.”
“By contrast, Sen. Obama is at least grappling with ways to achieve universal coverage, to address the financial calamity of those confronting the price-gouging healthcare industry, and to expand regulatory oversight over the insurance companies.”

I am one nurse who is absolutely NOT for Obama!!! Everytime he opens his mouth, he looks like a fool. Plus he is too inexperienced and that kind of change, America does not need. I live in Dayton Ohio and am going to see John McCain this coming Friday. He already has my vote.

I agree with Kittyrn.....Obama is inexperienced and I find it hard to believe that all 80,000 members are going to vote for him, so it's not a good idea for them to endorse him....if he gets elected, there will be more chaos than ever in the united states, we need someone with experience, especially military experience......

I do not support Obama....a man who is a freshman senator with virtually zero experience, running for the biggest office in the country? The majority of his voting record is 'absent' or 'present', not a yea or nea. If I had a brain tumor, I would go to the most experienced surgeon I could find, not an untested resident.

The fact the cna/nnoc endorsed obama is i think a good move by enorsing him they will hopefully help him achieve the goal of getting our fellow americanson health care but will is be affordable for everyone will the benifits prices flucuate by the year or even months at a time. Yes it was a good move but could be deadly if not dealt with the right way, could hurt alot of people.

Whomever you support, then support them by voting. If you don't vote, then don't complain

i do not consider the person who had his sex changed to a male a true male because he kept his female uterus which distiguishes us from a male. I guess I thought that a male born a male was attempting a birth, I guess i may have also felt this was cheating a little. It is nice however that a beautiful baby arrived safely.

RN4Mercy: You are so right. The ERs in the inner cities and the ERs in the suburbs are as different as night and day. I did some clinical rotations and volunteer work at both Grady Hospital and NorthSide Hospital in Atlanta. I keep hearing the undertones of what suggests that immigrants are sucking the welfare system dry. So far from the truth. The largest recipient of welfare are American born Caucasians. Do I think something needs to be done about illegal immigration? You betcha.

I'm seeing the fascist totalitarian politics of California and I'm not liking it much. I don't have health insurance, I'm one of the millions uninsured but I'm not willing to sacrifice my personal freedom so mommy can come to the rescue. I have a mother already and I don't need an organization or government forcing and coercing me how to live and think. I'm so tired of people pushing me how to live and think for my own good. Communism failed people and socialism is in he midst of imploding in the western world. Just because I don't agree doesn't mean I'm not educated on the issues. What an arrogant and demeaning statement to make. I don't like Obama or McCain, more of the same failed ideologies. Yet organizations want to misrepresent innocent nurses like me against our will for their personal gain. I'll say it again. Unethical and a gross abuse of trust and power. How anyone could support such coercive totalitarian actions is beyond me.

solitias, unless you move somewhere, where CNA is not the union of choice, you won't have choice. So perhaps California may not be the place of choice for you to move.

First, I am not against immigrants. If you are legal, you are a American. When you add illegal to the equation, you are breaking the law, which makes you, anti-American, which means you are a thief, taking something that doesn't belong to you, or taking from a person that has that rightful claim to something.

You are so right dazzy. Why should we judge a person for his belief. What I can't deal with is hypocracy. I not naming any names, but you know who I am talking about. How can you say your a Christian, and you are stealing. I can accept a person moral beliefs, better than a person that use religion as a undelying motive to accomplish a self gain, why are you going to hate a person for his own spiritual beliefs, I like Obama, because he is honest, he loves his wife. Why would you want to put a person in office that doesn't practice morality.
