After earning a BS Ed. and serving in the Navy as a medic, I wanted to become a nurse. VA Hospital work for 12+ years and the VA still wouldn't pay for RN schooling. I left the VA and earned a full scholarship for LPN school. I needed to work for a few years to save for school and still can't find an employer to provide Tuition Reimbursement to complete my RN ,although I have most credits needed to have a BSN. Pay scales in my area are below average and the lack of instructors at local colleges limit class sizes, if you are lucky enough to be selected in a nursing class. How can I reach my goal while working full-time to support my family?

I am surprised after being in the Navy you don't have a full ride for schooling. I thought they granted monies for education!? Anyway...I don't know what area you live in but there are so many options out there. Alot of hospitals have "scholarships" that they give you providing you commit to working for them for approx 2 years after you obtain your license. They pay your whole tuition, books and everything. I would apply to as many schools as possible, if it means enough to you, maybe you need to relocate to an area with more schools, giving yourself more options and opportunity for acceptance into one of the schools, considering they are so limited. Some schools have part time programs, not many, but they are out there. Alot of hospitals offer tuition reimbursement. I live in Florida, and I hear about tuition reimbursement all the time. Also, depending on your income and family size, maybe you would qualify for a pell grant, or university grant. If not, thats okay, you can still get money for school by taking student loans. I am in my final year of nursing at FAU and have worked and survived off my loans. You can get around 10K a year, if not more. Contact your guidance counselor and financial aid office - they have all the answers regarding funding. Good luck, don't give up. If you want it bad enough - make it happen!

Have you considered an online program? I doubt you'll get tuition reimbursement, but it may be the easiest way for you to do it. Hope it helps.
