JUAREZ, Mexico – A 990-pound bedridden man who had appealed on Mexican television for help tackling his weight problem died Tuesday of heart failure, his family said.

Emergency officials had to knock down Jose Luis Garza’s bedroom wall and load him onto the back of a friend’s pickup truck as he fought for his life. The 47-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in northern Mexico.

Garza followed in the footsteps of the world’s fattest man, fellow Mexican Manuel Uribe of Monterrey, by taking his weight problem public. Garza lived about an hour away from Uribe in the town of Juarez.

Garza said he always struggled with his weight, but that he fell into a desperate cycle of depression and overeating nine months ago after his parents died of natural causes within two weeks of each other. He had been bedridden for four months.

Garza’s condition deteriorated over the weekend as he struggled to breathe and eat. At his funeral, family members slammed state officials for not moving Garza to a hospital before he became critically ill.

“If he had received support at the time he asked for it, he would still be with us,” said his brother Pedro Garza.

I heard of this story before, and government officials said they were helping him, but they were not giving him what he needed at all! The friends should have stepped up while he was in depressiona dn he could have still been here if he would have received help when he asked for it in the begining. How sad and may he rest in peace.

i think that the officials should have stepped in to help this man beore it was to late, but i also blame this man's friends as well for not seeking help to him after the time of his parents' passing! really does teach us that life is to short!~

Sad...but his family should have sought help for him when he fell into depression before it even got as far as the overeating.

It is really sad that people are able to get this big. Not saying it is anyone's fault, but there should be more help out there for people who want to be healthier. What I don't understand is that it is cheaper to buy unhealthy items than what it is to buy healthy ones. I feel bad for his family and may he rest in peace.

This is a problem that we will be seeing, more and more of, unfortunately. Although we are making advances, there is simply not the proper equipment to give patients like this the care that they need. (This does not excuse a lack of treatment) We had lots of patients at my former hospital who were too obese to get a decent chest xray to determine PNA. The lifts we had did not accomodate morbidly obese patients. Big boy beds are sometimes not big enough. One nurse I know has sent patients to Seaworld to use their equipment for the large marine mammals (that is not a joke, not meant to be funny). Very sad.

I can't believe this, how can a country let this man be die like this. Depression without treating is like cancer, it can kill you. God have mercy on his soul.

Since he was bedridden, who brought the food and enabled him to maintain his poor state of health? I doubt it was a government official.

What's the Scoop?
