Eileen Wilbur's daughter first noticed the letter November 1 when she returned from vacation, that warned of a lien against her mothers home and a $48 penalty if the overdue water/sewer bill for a past due amount of 1 cent if it was not paid by Dec. 10.  You read it right, this little old blind lady was threatened with a lein against her home because of 1 cent!    Eileen Wibur had not been aware what the notice said because of her blindness.  The 74-year-old blind woman's 1 cent debt to a Massachusetts city has been settled.  Antonio Viveiros, a former city councilor who does not know Wilbur, wrote a check for one penny.

It is amazing to me that Attleboro Massachusetts was going after a little old lady for one cent.  The clerks office must not have enough to do.

People from across the country called Attleboro City Hall on Tuesday offering to pay the 1 cent balance owed by Eileen Wilbur for an overdue water and sewer bill.

Mayor Kevin Dumas made the understatement of the year when he stated, "the whole situation was blown out of proportion."

(Perhaps the mayor should add a "b" in the center of his name and another "s" on the end.)

Step aside, IRS. Pay attention, Darth Vader! There's a new evil bad-guy in town, and he picks on blind old ladies. Thanks for posting this one, prettykitty.

This truly was an insane article. The poor woman and one cent! Putting a lien on her home?! Come on. Kudos to Antonio for paying the one cent. We need some more people like this in the world. A lein on this poor woman's home for one cent? What about these CEO's now asking for money from the government to help save their companies. Drown I say. You put yourself in this boat. Well the one cent articile was truly blown out of proportion! Shame on the people who started the whole stupid ordeal. You can find a penny in any street you walk on. Pick it up and help save someone's HOME!!!!

What's the Scoop?
