Too  many people put off something that brings them joy because they haven't thought about it, don't have  it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine. I got to thinking a while back about the women on the Titanic who passed up dessert that fateful night in an effort to cut back on calories. From then on, I have tried to be more flexible. How many women out there will eat at home because their husband did not suggest going our to dinner until something had thawed? Does the word 'refrigeration' mean nothing to you? How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched 'Jeopardy' on TV? I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, "How about going to lunch in a half an hour? She would gas up the stammer, " I can't. I have clothes to wash. My hair is dirty, I wish you had called me yesterday to warn me, I ate a big breakfast, and my favorite: "It's a Monday."  SHe died a few years ago, we never did have lunch together. Because Americans cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule our headaches. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect. We'll go back and visit the grand parents when the baby is potty trained. We'll entertain when we replace the carpet, we'll go on a second honey moon when we got two more kids off to college.

Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer...One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of 'I'm going to,' 'I plan on,' and 'Someday, when things are settled down a bit.'  When anyone calls my "seize the moment" friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. SHe is open to new ideas, her enthusiasm is contagious. You talk to her 5 minutes and you are ready to trade your tired feet for roller blades. I have been on a diet for 15 years now, my lips have not touched ice cream in all that time, I LOVE ice cream. It's just that I might as well apply it directly to my butt with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped my care and bought a triple-decker ice cream. If my car had hit an ice berg  on the way home I would have died happy.

Now...go on and have a great day, be nice to someone today that you may not like, DO something you WANT to...not something you SHOULD do. If you were going to die soon and had only ONE phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And WHY are you waiting to make that call?  When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head? Ever told your child, 'We'll do it tomorrow.' And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die? Just call to say 'Hi? WHen you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an un-opened gift. Thrown away...Life is NOT a race....Take it slower, hear the music before the song is over.

Life may NOT be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance!'

Sorry it was so long, in a thoughtful mood right now, hugs Patty

I've gotten this in an e-mail before...very nice.

One thing I can say is that I eat everything I want, I have NEVER dieted! I just eat in moderation and don't deny myself anything.

I think all the people on this site that are e-mailing all types of other nurses/students, are hearing that music...what a beautiful sound!

Thanks for the submission, Patty!

AbusyRN2go,

All I can say is AMEN. As I eat my chocolate chip cookies my daughter left on a plate in the refrigerator for her momma to have a late night snack.

My Uncle just died suddenly 3 days ago of a heart attack, no warning always healthy, my aunt had not written us in about 20 years, I always sent cards and never heard a word, so I stopped, she emailed me yesterday, wondering were everyone was, I told her"you have never once written or called in all these years" she paused and said " you know you get so caught up in everyday garbage you forget what IS important" and I thought of the post on this topic, do not we all have the same thing going on, days turn to weeks month and 10 years is gone, I have made a point this past week of calling friends that I had not talked to in a while to see how they are and calling family who live far away more often, life is what is happening while your making other plans.
