I have been an Rn for 21 years this month and have taken a break from nursing since 11-06 which is almost two years. I am ready to return, but am finding no hospital willing to hire me. I have a proven track record and am a great nurse. I even had Florida Hospital tell me I would have to take a refresher course. I looked into that as a matter of curiousity and it is for nurses out of the field for 5 or more years. I have not forgotten 19 years of skills. With the nursing shortage I am surprised at this attitude, no wonder there is a shortage. Any suggestions? I am also noticing jobs disappearing and being replaced with LPN ads and many more CNA's and MA's.

Sorry you are having trouble.  I would think most employers would want to hire someone with your experience.  You may have to take  a refresher course or you may be able to find something outside of the hospital environment where you could get your feet wet again.  I know some places have a preceptor or mentor assigned to new staff until the ropes are learned.  Good luck.
