Hi everyone,

My family has just started looking into adopting a rescued Greyhound through our local rescue group. We have one dog who was adopted from the Humane Society 2 1/2 yrs. ago. He is a 3 yr. old neutured Greyhound/Huskie mix who has little experience with other dogs. My husband and I also have one child, a daughter, who is 10 yrs. old and great with animals. What advice could those of you who have adopted Greyhounds give me on getting my family, dog, house, etc. ready for this? Thanks so much!

Greyhounds are great with kids. They are also good around other dogs. remember, that is all they know, being in a kennel around other dogs.

You introduce them first, on neutral ground, not in "his" yard or house.  Walk them together, for at least a half hour before you bring the new dog into the house.  Watch them for the first few weeks, because most greyhounds don't fight, but since your first one is  mixed with a husky, you need to be a bit careful of the new dog.  Greyhounds have as you know have very little coat or body fat so they can be hurt very easily by a  more aggressive dog.

Before you bring the new one home, you should make a really big effort to socialize your current dog with other dogs. Take him to the dog park, ask friends to bring over their dogs to help socialize him.  Good luck, greyhounds are great dogs, but never let them off lead outside a fenced in area.

Multiple dogs...not for me.  My married daughter has 4 dogs AND a 2-yr old son.  No wonder I rarely hear from her.

So, okay Lilijo, how is it going with the 3 yr old huskie/greyhound mix dog?  I do not know much about this breed.  I'm just interested in learning how he is adjusting to life in your home, now that you have gotten him?  Where does a dog that big sleep?  (Did I hear you say, 'Wherever he wants'?
